The Ground is the sleeve, the Tip is the signal. Connected to a set of headphones, each earpiece would receive exactly the same signal, and you would hear mono. This is a Tip/Sleeve plug, and is a Mono interconnect. Notice that there are two areas of metal separated by one plastic ring. For a balanced interconnect, the sleeve is ground, the tip is one signal pin, the ring is the other signal pin. For Stereo, the sleeve is ground, the tip is one channel, the ring is the other channel. With another TRS plug, or an XLR connector on the other end, it's a balanced interconnect, and not stereo at all. With a female jack on the other end, it's a stereo extension cord. With headphones on the other end, it's a Stereo connection. There is the Tip, then a plastic ring, not to be confused with the metal Ring, separated by another plastic ring, and then comes the Sleeve. You'll notice three metal areas separated by two plastic bits. Take a standard pair of headphones, and look at the plug. Let's talk about TS and TRS, also known as Tip/Sleeve and Tip/Ring/Sleeve. It all depends on what you are doing, and using the cable for! TRS, TS, Balanced, Unbalanced, Stereo or Insert cable.
